Split-phase to split phase transformer is a specialized electrical device used in electrical power systems for differential protection. This CT consists of two separate windings or coils, each designed to receive the current from one phase of the system.

Working principle

 

When single-phase AC is applied to the primary winding, it generates a pulsating alternating magnetic field in the transformer core.

This pulsating magnetic field simultaneously cuts the two windings on the secondary side (usually arranged at 90 degrees in space).

Since the two secondary windings are orthogonal in space (90 degrees), according to the law of electromagnetic induction (Faraday's law), their induced electromotive force (voltage) will naturally produce a 90-degree phase difference in time.

The output voltage amplitude can be ensured to be equal through precise winding turns ratio and connection method.

 

Tips: Transformer overload operation

 

Before overload operation, check whether the transformer has serious defects (such as abnormal cooling system, serious oil leakage, partial overheating, abnormal analysis results of dissolved gas in oil, etc.) or insulation weakness. If so, it should not be overrun. Load operation. When the transformer is running under overload, the spare cooler should be put into operation immediately, and the temperature of the upper layer of the transformer, ambient temperature and time should be observed. And record the overload time and overload multiple, the overload multiple during normal overload operation.

 

Applications

 

Powering two-phase devices: This is the main purpose. In the early days of electricity, especially in the United States, there were some motors (induction motors, synchronous motors) and other devices that used a two-phase (four-wire) system. Single-phase to split-phase transformers can convert the then-popular single-phase mains electricity into the two-phase power required by these devices.

Generate a rotating magnetic field: Two-phase electricity with a 90-degree phase difference, when input to a two-phase motor (usually with two stator windings that are 90 degrees apart in space), can generate a rotating magnetic field. This rotating magnetic field is the key to driving the rotor to rotate. This is its most important electrical characteristic.
